Kodaikanal Reunion-Colorado 17th-20th August 2001

.In August 2001 my husband, myself and our two younger children visited the USA. You can see some of our travel stories atAmerica We had an unusual itinerary. First we flew to Houston, which was one of the few places we could find places on a flight to the USA in August for four people using Birtish Airways air miles. After one night there we flew to Nashville to meet a group of friends I had met on the internet- who came from California, Louisiana, Texas, Nashville and Cottage Grove in Western Tennesee. You can read all about that at The Get together | Then from Nashville we went to Denver from where we drove directly to Colorado Springs. And then on the Friday of that week we did a grand drive from near there all the way to Estes Park following a scenic route. I have not done a website of that , but if anyone wants to see some of our pics, you can always email me. Anyway you can see just two of them above below

We went past some large lakes and then went up to a height of about 11,000 feet before going down into a valley which was Estes Park. Signs to the YMCA were clearly posted and we soon found ourselves being greeted with our goody bags, our room keys and some bottled water for the high atmosphere.

We were encircled by mountains . We had out evening meal and came across various people with blue and orange balloons and Kodai badges. . That evening we all went into a large hall.We started the evening with a "people quiz" where we were given a piece of paper and our task was to find someone in the room who fitted the descriptions on our sheet. These included finding someone who had ridden a camel or elephant , someone who had never been to Inida, someone who understands the game of cricket, someone who had climbed to the top of perumal and someone who can speak three languages or more.

Various people gave speeches, and we had a tiger story. Then we were all asked for reminiscences. Many had memories of Mr Musil and I chimed in with a story my mother told about how when Mr Musil was away from Kodai, his high school French students sent him a telegram which read. "without you Les Miserables", which unfortunately in its wisdom the Indian Post Office rewrote as "without you, less miserable!".

The next morning after breakfast there was a formal session when we had an address from Paul Wiebe and we then met in small groups with two sesssions. The sessions I chose were I think "about admissions" and about the religious life dimensions of KIS". Then it was time for the serious stuff- a Field Day with of course Orange versus Blue.

The first game was called feeeding the elephant. We were in teams , lines up in a relay race. The object, if I remember rightly was to carry a cup ful of peanuts and then pour it into the trunk of a paper elephant and then run back to our team.

Here you can see me standing by the elephant. Other pictures show one of the kids who is runing back from feeding the elephantand the third picture shows my daughter Karen with the elephant.

There were four more events. One of them was a chai race where we had two genuine Indian steel tumblers and we had to run pouring the contents- water disguised as chai from one cup to the other without spilling the contents.

The next race was a dhobi race. There were bundles of clothes wrapped up in a sheet and the runners had to dress up in either a dhoti or sari and then run back. There was also something which was not a race but was a co-operative atempt to provide human chairs for each other

After the races we had our lunch. After lunch there was a KISAA annual meeting and the afternoon was free. Our family went swimming in the very nice pool and just enjoyed the scenery. We also worked hard writing anagrams of KODAI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL.I had A-OK learn and cook in a hillstation and Shark Tail?!
